Style: Editorial-Tech Revival

The dominant "premium product" look of 2022–2026. Originated with Stripe Press, popularized by Linear/Vercel/Anthropic, now copied widely enough to be at risk of becoming the new default.

Recipe

  • Headlines in editorial serifs — Tiempos, Fraunces, Söhne (when sans), Polysans, Public Sans, Berkeley Mono for accents.
  • Body in a clean sans — often the same family at smaller sizes if variable, or a paired humanist sans.
  • Whitespace generous — at least 40% of marketing screens unfilled.
  • Color is restrained — neutrals + one accent. The accent appears sparingly, usually for CTAs and highlights.
  • Single subtle gradient or solid backgrounds — never aurora-style mesh.
  • Photography that feels documentary or none at all (pure type-led).
  • Motion is slow and considered — 400–700ms eases, subtle parallax, no springs.
  • Footer is a minor moment — small type, lots of whitespace.

Tokens

  • Background: warm off-white (oklch(0.985 0.005 95)) or paper-cool.
  • Foreground: near-black ink (oklch(0.20 0.012 250)).
  • Accent: single saturated hue, used at <5% page area.
  • Type scale: editorial — 1.333 or 1.414 ratio, big jumps.
  • Motion: 400ms cubic-bezier(0.25, 1, 0.5, 1) as default ease.

Pitfalls

  • Now the AI-default for "premium". Risk of all premium SaaS looking identical.
  • Empty whitespace ≠ design — must earn the whitespace with strong type contrast.
  • Photography selection matters. Stock photos kill the effect instantly.
  • Tightening to small screens — generous whitespace doesn't translate; rebuild the mobile rhythm.

How to differentiate

  • Pair the serif headline with an unusual mono accent (Berkeley Mono, Cartograph CF).
  • Allow one off-grid element (a tilted card, a tilted photo) per page.
  • Use a non-neutral background tint (sage, ochre, warm gray) instead of cream.
  • Commit to a single distinctive photo style (b&w portraiture, isometric line drawing, etc.) rather than mixing imagery.

When to choose it

  • B2B SaaS that wants to be taken seriously.
  • AI products targeting developers / enterprise.
  • Premium consumer brands (newsletter, publishing, fintech).
